The young women of the region are often subjected to the violence of female genital mutilation (FGM) as well as abusive homes. This practice has only recently been outlawed, however due to entrenched misguided “traditional” attitudes, hundreds of girls flee to this Safe house annually. Many others are rescued prior to being “cut”.

The Safe House in Mugumu is a desperately needed refuge in the region, providing shelter and education for these remarkably resilient young African girls.
